Growing what you consume is satisfying on every level, and there's nothing like a homegrown tomato! Store bought are ripened with ethylene gas (yuck!) and have little nutritional value. You're also reducing food miles (store bought food travels an average of 1500 miles) and you can share with your friends an neighbors, strengthening ties to your community.

In western Oregon, we eat greens and brussel sprouts or broccoli and roots most of the winter. Apple, kale, parsley and a little lemon makes a great green drink in the blender....

In California I like lemon and lime trees the best. They give fruit year round and are always handy for great dishes and drinks.
