Most condoms are made of latex. Although latex is biodegradeable, it has a tendency not to biodegrade while under water. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, condoms are mistaken by animals for food and eaten when improperly disposed of such as flushing them down the toilet. When condoms are disposed of improperly they can end up in the ocean and cover reefs and contribute to the growing debris build up. In 2006, The Ocean Conservancy beach cleaner-uppers picked up and estimated 30,252 condoms. The best way to dispose of a condom is to wrap it in a tissue or a paper towel and throw it into the garbage.
