Plant a tree on the south or west side of your home to provide cooling shade and reduce 150 pounds of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere. Each tree you plant can help absorb up to 2,000 pounds of CO2 during its lifetime. One acre of tree cover can compensate for automobile fuel use equivalent to driving a car between 7,200 and 8,700 miles.
According to the Department of Energy, strategic planting of as few as three trees can provide the average household with an energy savings of between $100-$250 annually. It may be the best long-term investment for reducing heating and cooling costs. http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf215718.tip.html

This is a good idea, but I don't think it would work for my neck of the woods. We live in an area with very little water (not unlike some areas of CA). Most of our water comes from an underground source that is in real danger of running out. My biggest pet peeve of the area is people who plant trees. They were not meant to grow here. They just take so much water. No tree is native to the texas panhandle.
However, for places where trees are better suited for growing, I totally agree with this idea, and think it is a great solution!
