No it doesn't mean running a marathon. Hypermiling is a combination of gas-saving techniques that any driver can use when they get behind the wheel. No hybrid required.
This CNN Money article hits one of the most important techniques... Brothers and sisters... Lay off the gas. Unless you're being chased, chances are you don't need to be accelerating that fast. Slow starts and coasting as much as possible are big helps. And I do mean coasting, as in putting your car in neutral on hills (and at red lights).
On a related note... Cover the brakes! "With what?" You may ask. Your foot. But don't push down. One of the most bizarre phenomena of traffic is the gas, brake, gas, brake tango. But you don't have to push on a pedal. Your car is heavy. It will slow down.
Another hypermiling staple is... Drive barefoot. Or in socks. At any rate, ditch the shoes. Your tootsies are more sensitive than those clod-hoppers and your engine (and your wallet) will thank you. You will naturally accelerate and brake more gradually.
The options are many. Are you a hypermiler?
