It takes more energy for your fridge to constantly cool down air than to keep cool items cool.  Same goes for the freezer.  Keeping your fridge full will also make it quieter, because it doesn't turn on as often.  So, if you don't have lots of food in there- put in other things (jugs of water, non-perishables, dead pets).

While I'm at it- make sure to check your fridge's energy rating when buying, and don't buy a fridge that is too big for your needs.

when I had a chest freezer (and more family to feed) I had a board with file labels and nails and a cotainer of washers to pu on the nails. So under the label for "strawberries' would be a nail with as many washers on it as I had packages of strawberries in the freezer.

Now I'm thinking I could make a general list like this for fridge using magnets to indicate if I have any, a yes or no board. Or a strip of felt with circles of felt....all my usual frig foods like yogurt, crushed garlic, nut butters. Makes it easy to see what you need at the store too.

Keep a list of your food on the outside of the fridge also.
